Animal Welfare Marcelle du Plessis

Animal Welfare

Meet Marcelle, a dedicated advocate for animal welfare and a survivor of eating disorders. In 2010, she embarked on a journey of recovery from anorexia and bulimia, finding solace and purpose in her furry companion, Baloo. Inspired by her bond with Baloo, Marcelle committed herself to serving animals and their human companions.

Since 2013, Marcelle has served as the Fundraising and Communications Executive at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha, Cape Town—a community grappling with poverty and home to over 300,000 companion animals. Under her leadership, the clinic has experienced remarkable growth, expanding its services to provide vital care to over 1500 animals monthly. Marcelle's efforts have propelled the organization from a one million rand yearly budget to a robust 15 million rand operation.

"it's her sanctuary"

In 2023, Marcelle furthered her commitment to animal welfare by becoming a qualified Animal Welfare Inspector, championing the fight against neglect and abuse while advocating for education and prosecution when necessary. For Marcelle, Mdzananda is more than just a workplace—it’s her sanctuary.

With over a decade dedicated to leveraging her expertise in fundraising, public relations, and marketing, Marcelle continues to make a profound impact on the lives of animals and the community. Catch Marcelle on various television and radio programs, featured in newspapers, or at her engaging talks, where she shares the inspiring work of Mdzananda in the community.
